Please treat these records as secondary sources. Although some of the data
on these pages is from primary sources the remainder has been provided
to me by secondary sources (e.g., records from other persons, books that
are not official documents, etc...). These sources in most cases are accurate
but on occasion records have been passed on, that have invalid data
and/or transcription errors.
It is best that when researching your family lines that you take secondary
records as just that; a starting place. Armed with the secondary
information you can go to the towns and villages where your family lived
and look up the primary data. I hope that what you find here will inspire
you to dig into your roots and share that information with others.

Jeffery (Geoffrey) Easty came to Salem, MA with his family, Mary 11 years
old, baptized 02/17/1625 at Freston, Suffolk Co., England and Isaac 9 years
old, baptized 11/17/1627. They had a third child, Catherine, baptized
02/17/1629 (location unknown but suspect Freston, Suffolk Co.). Jeffery was
the founder of the Easty, Esty, Estey etc... faimily lines in America as well
as one line of Estes (Nathaniel b. 10-25-1746 changed spelling to Estes ).
The following is an excerpt from "ISAAC ESTY OF TOPSFIELD AND SOME OF HIS
DESCENDANTS" by Gay Esty Bangs (date unknown). {from The Historical
Collections of the Essex Institute Vol 36.}
"The first mention in America of the name Esty, or as it is otherwise
spelled, Estey, Este, Estee, Easte, Eastey, and Easty," is in Salem, where
one Jeffery Esty was granted twenty acres of land in the year 1636."
This 20 acres was in Mackerel Cove (Marblehead MA).
The Bangs account continues: "From the Essex County Registry of Deeds we
copy the following: ""23-6-1651, Jeffery Esty hath sold the arbadge or
after feeding of the five acre lot to Henry
Bullock. The planting thereof was formerly granted to Nathaniel Bishop as
by a writing dated the day and year above written.""
Also ""A caveat recorded for William Dixie who bought of Jeffery Estee
thirty acres of upland 30 pounds in Mackerel Cove. 6 Oct. 1651, the said
Estee being out of jurisdiction cannot yet be called to acknowledge the
same."" In the year 1651, it seems, Jeffery Esty had left Salem and was out
of jurisdiction. The facts are that he removed to Long Island, setteling
for a time at Southhold, thence to Huntington and later to Little Neck
where he died Jan. 4, 1657. He made a will, without date, which was
probated Jan. 23, following, and was written by Henery Scudder, his
son-in-law. This will mentions a daughter Catherine and a son Isaac.
Catherine married, first, Henry, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Scudder, of
Salem, who made his will
Jan. 25, 1661; second, Tho. Jones who settled at Huntington, making his will
Feb. 16, 1669."
The following information was supplied by Scott C. Estey of Brookline, MA.:
Jeffery's Grandfather (also Jeffery) was born in Hintlesham, Suffolk England
in the year 1515. Jeffery received a land grant, probably the
aforementioned 20 acres, the year of 1636 when he arrived in Salem.
Margaret:
"History of Salem, Mass." Vol I by Sidney Perley has Margaret's maiden name as
"Pote or Pett" and she married Jeffrey on May 29, 1609 (info provided by Mila
E. Rindge, Madison CT 03/14/96). Originally I had the name to be Potts which
was taken from hand written family records. Another record has her maiden name
as "Pott" (Ancestors of Eveleme Estey Woods Gless)

Mary was born in England, Married daughter of William Towne and Joannah

"ISAAC ESTY AND SOME OF HIS DECENDANTS" By Gay Esty Bangs (Date unknown).
"Mary Towne was born at Yarmouth, Norfolk Co., England, and baptized at St.
Nicholus church, Aug. 24, 1634. We know little of her life until 1692, when
that terrible witchcraft delusion spread over Salem Village and vicinity.
Among those to fall victim was Mary Esty. Her sister Rebecca Nourse, about
thirteen years older, had previously been accused, found guilty and
executed July 19, 1692.
Before Mary was executed she wrote a letter to the magistrate to plead
mercy for those who might follow her. The contents of that letter follows:
"The Humble Petition of Mary Easty unto his Excellency Sir William
Phips, and to the Honored judge and Bench now sitting in Judicature in
Salem, and the Reverend Ministers, humbly showeth, That, whereas, your
poor humble petitioner, being condemned to die, do humbly beg of you
to take it in your judicious and pious consideration that your poor
and humble petitioner, knowing my own innocency, blessed be the Lord
for it! and seeing plainly the wiles and subtility of my accusers by
myself, cannot but judge charitably of others that are going the same
way of myself, if the Lord steps not mightily in. I was confined a
whole month upon the same account that I am condemned now for, and
then cleared by the afflicted persons, as some of Your Honors know.
And in two days' time I was cried out upon them, and have been
confined, and now am condemned to die. The Lord knows my innocency
then, and likewise does now, as at the great day will be known to men
and angels. I petition to Your Honors not for my own life, for I know
I must die, and my appointed time is set; but the Lord he knows it is
that, if it be possible, no more innocent blood may be shed, which
undoubtedly cannot be avoided in the way and course you go in. I
question not but Your Honors do to the utmost of your powers in the
discovery and detecting of witchcraft and witches, and would not be
guilty of innocent blood for the world. But, by my own innocency, I
know you are in the wrong way. the Lord in his infinite mercy direct
you in this great work, if it be his blessed will that no more
innocent blood be shed! I would humbly beg you, that Your Honors
would be pleased to examine these afflicted persons strictly, and keep
them apart some time, and likewise to try some of these confessing
witches; I being confident there is several of them has belied
themselves and others, as will appear, if not in this world, I am sure
in the world to come, Whither I am now agoing. I question not but you
will see an alteration of these things. They say myself and others
having made a league with the Devil, we cannot confess. I know, and
the Lord knows, as will ... appear, they belie me, and so I question
not but they do to others. The Lord above, who is the Searcher of all
hearts, knows, as I shall answer it at the tribunal seat, that I know
not the least thing of witchcraft; Therefore I cannot, I dare not,
belie my own soul. I beg your Honors not to deny this my humble
petition from a poor, dying, innocent person. And I question not but
the Lord will give a blessing to your endeavors."
Isaac worked twenty long years to clear his wife of the charge and was to
some measure successful when the court annulled the verdict and awarded the
sum of twenty pounds in acknowledgement to the injustice.

Iowa and bought 160 acres at $1.25 an acre in Buchanan County. As well as
farming Daniel owned and ran a threshing ring. By that time they had five
children and one on the way. A terrible accedent ended Daniel's life when he

Euphrasia with a big family to care for which included Daniel's parents. Their

after he completed 8th grade at the local country school. He later was able
to attend a small college 20 miles from the farm. He received his teaching
certificate and taught school for 6 years as well as a "singing" school.

Lois wrote that she & I (George Estey) must be cousins. She recalls the
stories about Mary Esty and witchcraft trials being told and retold in her
family. Sometimes she was hanged - sometimes burned at the stake. Her two
older sisters tormented her as a child by saying she was a witch and gathered
sticks to burn her at the stake. She also has a copy of a birth cirtificate
which states that her grandmother Cynthia Estey's father was named Isaac and
written below where the mother's name is the word Polly and then scratched
out. The mother's name or the town of birth is not readable on the copy.
On June 3rd, 1996 Lois sent me a copy of the birth cirtificate and the names are:
Name of Child: Cynthia Esty ( Note 1: this line is where Polly is scratched out)
Name of Mother: Polly Esty ( Note 2: this line has the word "WARNER" beside it)
Name of Father: Isaac Esty
This connects Lois P. (Carvey) Kalm's family to the line of Jeffery Estie.

It is with great sadness I enter this as I have just received a letter from
Norm Olsen, Lois' Son-in-law. Lois "died in her home Sunday afternoon the
4th of October 1998. Her doctor thought she had a sudden heart failure. She
had an emergency call button around her neck but apparently had no time to use
it."

OBITUARY:
Lois P. Kalm 1902 - 1998
Lois Pauline Carvey was born on February 9, 1902 in rural Hazelton, Iowa,
the daughter of Doric C. and Elizabeth (Menzel) Carvey. Sheb was baptized at
the Prairie Center Methodist Church in June of 1902 by Rev. Horace Foat. She
was confirmed in 1925 by Rev. E.J. Braulick into Zion Lutheran Church in
Olwein. Lois married Donald E. Kalm on July 25, 1923 at her parents home near
Hazelton, Iowa. He died on October 29. 1988. Lois taught in rural schools
and at the Stanley school. She also assisted her husband in the refinishing
business for 33 years. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she had
given 30 years of service to the Sunday School (10 years as a Sunday school
teacher, 10 years as Sunday school secretary, and 10 years as Sunday school
treasurer). She was a lifelong Hazelton and Olwein resident.
Survivors include: Elizabeth May (Betty) and Howard Parker of Olwein;
Roberta Ann and Norman Olsen of Nevada, Iowa; 7 Grandchildren; 12 Great
Grandchildren; 4 Step Grandchildren; 7 Step Great Grandchildren; 2 Sisters;
Donna Burgess of Kissimmee, Florada, Dorothy Stone of Strawberry Point, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 1 grandson, 1 great
granddaughter, 2 sisters, 1 brother.
----------------------------------------------------
I met Lois only once in 1996 when my wife, Kathy, and I were returning from a
fishing trip in Montana. We stopped by her home in Olwein, IA and spent the
afternoon with Lois and her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Howard Parker.
From the time she responded to a query I had placed in Yankee Magazine, I
felt she had been a friend my whole life. Farewell my dear seventh cousin
until we again meet in that place Jesus Christ has prepared for us.
George W. Estey, October 22, 1998
Donald:
In addition to the two daughter's Don and Lois had, they have eight grand
children and thirteen great grand children. Don passed away in 1988 after a
long illness; strokes and heart attacks. Lois now lives alone in Don's
parents house which was built by them in 1890. Today, 05/02/1996, Lois is 94
years old.

From the Bangs account of Isaac Esty of Topsfield: Aaron was born in
Topsfield He married Molly Hooper of Lynn. About 1770 removed to Rindge NH
then after a few years to Shrewsbery VT and thence to Leicester, VT where he
died Aug., 1844, retaining a rugged vitality almost to the very last. .... I
suspect this Aaron was named after his brother who died in the French/
American war in 1745. (George W. Estey)

"He lived in Rowley until 1764, when he moved with 3 sons, John, Zebuon and
Richard to a settlement lately formed by New England colonists on the banks of
the St. John River, New Brunswick, called Maugerville. Richard Esty was one
of the signers of the original covenant of the Congregational church founded
there. He left numerous descendants in New Brunswick, and many living in the
U.S.; W.P. Estey of Fredericton, and Jas A. Estey of St. John, are among them."

Born c. 1706, baptized April 7, 1706 at Topsfield, Massachusetts, British
North America - died March 26, 1791 at Sheffield, Sunbury County, New
Brunswick, Canada. He married on May 7, 1727/28, at Ipswich, Massachusetts, to
Ruth Fisk.
Ruth:
Ref. GEBangs
This data was taken from "Isaac Esty And Some Of His Descendants". In "The
History Of The Kimball Family In America" Ruth's parents are listed as Joseph
and Susahhah (Warner) Fiske.
Ref. TPDoberty
In Dr. Thomas P. Doberty's Ancestor Chart dated 3/1/1989 lists her birth data
as 08/20/1707 where the Kimball and Isaac Esty accounts show it to be 10/18/1709.
Ref. JCHatt
Born August 20th, 1707 at Ipswich, Massachusetts, if the daughter of Susannah
(Warner) and Joseph Fiske or born October 18th, 1709 at Wenham, Massachusetts,
if the daughter of Mary ( ) and William Fiske. She probably died at
Sheffield, NB, Canada.
J.C.Hatt points out the following controversy:
" Thomas P. Doherty has compiled genealogical material on the Fiske Family
and form his research I note the following statistics:-
Deacon William Fiske (Born 1642/42 - died February 5, 1738, age 85
years), married on January 15, 1662, to Sarah Kilham (born
November 7, 1640 - died January 26, 1738, age 97 years).
Sarah Kilham was from Dedham, Province of Massachusetts, British
North America and William Fiske was a weaver in the same province
Two of their children were Joseph Fiske and William Fiske, Jr.
1. William Fiske, Jr. (born January 31, 1663, at Wenham,
Massachusetts, married Mary _____.
2. Joseph Fiske (born April 14, 1672, at Wenham, Massachusetts,
married Susanna Warner of Ipswich, Massachusetts.
It is confirmed that Richard Estey, Sr. of Maugerville, Married Ruth
Fiske, and in his research the former Charles A. Towne interprets her to be
the daughter of Mary and William Fiske, and the former wife of a
David Kilburn (or Kilborn). Mr. Doherty could not confirm this statistic,
and notes that Ruth could be the daughter of either William or Joseph Fiske.
Descendants of the Kilburn family settled at Kingsclear, York County, New
Brunswick, and members of the family married into the Estey families of New
Brunswick. I have found no New Brunswick statistition making reference to
a Ruth Fiske - David Kilburn marriage. Could it be that David Kilburn married
the daughter of William Fiske and the 'Ruth Fiske' that married Richard
Estey was the daughter of Joseph Fiske?"

should be 1907) and d. 1906 at age 87. Cause of death listed as a stroke.

Amso' death as 05 Jan 1844 in Kingsclear The Brewer book "A Dutch-English
Odyssey" pg 116 states that Richard & Hannah's 5th child was named James and
he insists that this is correct as it is entered in a family bible of that
time. Entered as James not Amos. All other accounts have the name to be Amos.
NOTE: I have since been provided a copy of that Bible page and have been able to
use a program to clean up noise from the copy. This clears up the mystery
for me as the person who scribed the names of that generation used a swirl
or loop in front of each name. This swirl looks much like a capitol "J" and the
name Amos being placed very close behind makes the name look like James.
It is really J Amos. The "J" being just a form of decoration in front of each
name. (George Warren Estey 12 November, 2002)

marriage of an Isreal Oaks to a Lucy Esty on July 6th 1818 which is from R.

In RSchaffer's records John's birthplace is Topsfield, MA
Also in RSchaffer's records John & Mary's wedding date was 11-14-1769. The
location agrees with RRKeller's data.
The data from John Hatt adds more questions. His records have John's death as
October 6, 1824, ten years short of the Keller and Schaffer records. John's
marriage to Mary "Molly" Hartt date compares but the location he records is at
Sheffield, Nova Scotia.
Mary:

might have been Lynn, MA.

Amos:
Ref. CMcGehee, RSchaffer, TJEstey, FIBrewer, JCHatt The TJEstey account has
Amso' death as 05 Jan 1844 in Kingsclear The Brewer book "A Dutch-English
Odyssey" pg 116 states that Richard & Hannah's 5th child was named James and
he insists that this is correct as it is entered in a family bible of that
time as James not Amos.

The following is from "Isaac Esty And Some Of His Descendants" by Gay Esty Bangs
Joseph was raised in Topfield MA. He was a surveyor of highways in 1683.
About 1705, he moved with his family to a new settlement in Dorchester, that
part is now known as Stoughton. His name appears with that of his brother
Benjamin as one of the signers of the original covenant of the church of which
Rev. John Davenport was minister. In 1706 he obtained land of the Indians,
some of which is now located in the town of Canton. In 1712 he conveyed
seventy acres to his son Joseph Jr..

In February of 1771, John Estey bought a parcel of land in Stoughton, County
of Suffolk, Province of Massachusetts Bay. This parcel of land embraced a
portion of Mowhawk Meadow which yielded iron ore for Paul Revere to cast
cannon for the colinsts. George W. Estey has copy of deed and land survey
for this Mowhawk Meadow. His brother John S. Estey has the originals.
In 1792 John purchased more land in what had, at that time, become Sharon,
County on Suffolk, Commonwealth of Massachusetts - a portion of the town of
Stoughton having become Sharon. The passing years had also brought the change
from Province to Commonwealth.
In 1802 John, Yeoman of Sharon, County of Norfolk ( A change in county name)
conveys some 30 acres of land to Jeremiah Estey
John's gravesite is located in a small cemetary at 385 E. Foxboro Rd. in
Sharon, MA. His gravestone reads: In Memory of John Estey who died Nov. 27
1811 in the 78th year of his age.

Lizzie:
Ref. GWEstey, SJoyner, NWobesky
Sage Joyner gave me information that there was a George Washington Ballou who
had a daughter named Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ballou born 26 May 1863 in West
Medway, MA. This could be our Lizzie. West Medway is about 11 miles west of
Sharon, MA.
Norm Wobesky provided the following: (16 Sept 1999)
I noticed your posting, and since some of my wife's people had connections
with the Ballous, I thought I would check some of the VRs which are held at
the Haverhill Public Library.
The marriage of Lizzie Sarah Ballou, age 18, daughter of George W. and Eliza
(Daniels) Ballou, born Franklin[?], to Willard A. Estey, age 29, a teacher,
born Sharon, son of Willard G. and Mary, is recorded in both
Sharon and Ashburnham records; they were married in Sharon by H. C. Weston,
Minister, 3 Jan 1881. Mass VR 326:320 and 327:287.
Sarah Elizabeth Ballou was born 26 May 1863, in Medway, to George Ballou,
Manufacturer, born R.I., and Eliza Ballou, born Medway. Mass. VR 160:215.
Based on this information, it appears that *Lizzie Sarah* and *Sarah
Elizabeth* are the same person.
In the Franklin VRs, *The Record of Births, Marriages and Deaths in the Town
of Franklin from 1778 to 1872,* published by the Town in 1898: Marriage on 27
April 1854 of George W. Ballou, born Cumberland, RI,, son
of Thurston and Caroline Ballou, age 22, bootmaker, residence Franklin, MA, to
Eliza J. Daniels, 16, born Medway, daughter of Willard and Elizabeth Daniels,
residence Medway, by P. Crandon, M. E. Minister of
Woonsocket, RI.

Ref. MCDonald papers, GWEstey, MSEstey
Sometime around 1921, when she was about 13 years of age, Violet took ill with
jaundice or what today is called hepatitis. She suffered from the effects of
this for a long period of time. Due to the need for constant care and her
mother being burdened with the chores of boarding people in the home, Violet
went to San Marino, CA to live for a time with her Uncle John and Aunt Gurtie
Abel. This is where my mother learned to sew, knit and crochet. This was
the time when she played in the historic adobe house which stands by the
swimming pool at the San Marino High School. Violet made many of her clothes
including her wedding dress. She also learned from her Aunt Gurtie how to
paint green pottery and china and glaze the same.
My memories of my mother while I was growing up are of a woman who had many
talents and from her, I believe I gained the attitude that nothing was
impossible to do. (George Warren Estey. 1997)

Letter to Jo Branch.
Hi Jo,
I just got back from doing some checking in Houlton and may have found one of
your names for you.
Evergreen Cemetery, Houlton has:
W.H.H. Esty
Jan 31, 1840
June 15, 1907
Hannah Esty
April 25, 1844
Aug 28, 1924
There is one humongous stone with just ESTY (must weigh at least a ton).
W.H.H. Esty and Hannah Esty are two square blocks of granite to the left
of this large stone. They remind me of plaques in the ground and the
information is written on the top but these stones are raised approx 2 feet.
I took pictures so you will be able to see but I highly doubt that you can make
out W.H.H. Esty and Hannah Esty from the pictures. The letters and numbers
are raised rather than indented on the granite so there is no doubt on the
information. I could not believe the size of this cemetery. It seems to go on
forever and every turn you take all you see are headstones. I started at one
end and after 3 hours of looking the caretaker came over and asked if there
was anyone in particular that I was looking for as he had a list of who was
buried there and what plot they were in. I told him Tozer, Newell and Esty.
There are 3 Toziers there but no Newell's. I also asked about other cemeteries
in the Houlton area and he said there were others but that will be for another day.
I spent some time at the Library in Houlton as well before my trek through the
cemetery. Didn't come up with anything on Newell but there is so much
information that it will take more than a morning to go through. I did find
some info on Fannie Amanda
Tozier who married John Humbert Dunphy and even got a photocopy of her and
John and 3 of their children.
So all in all, I call it a successful day. I will be going back though so
will continue to look for Charles
Caleb Newell, and Annie E. Esty. The caretaker did tell me that he thought
others were buried in the same plot as W.H.H. Esty and Hannah Esty and I think
he may be right but we'll never know I guess unless we can find some records.
There was room for at least 8 people, the large granit stone with just ESTY on
it was in the middle and W.H.H.Esty and Hannah Esty are way over to the left
of the main stone. I was a little surprised that it wasn't W.C.H.Esty but I'm
sure it's W.H.H. Were all these folks Baptist? This Evergreen Cemetery is
all denominations and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to where they are
buried. The 3 Toziers I found were all in different plots.
All for now.
Lynn
PS The lady at the library told me they are now
undertaking a hugh project of transcribing all their
records and eventually they will all be on the
internet. The caretaker told me there were many
people at the cemtery about a month ago transcribing
all the headstones so this must be all for the same
project. Will be wonderful when all this info is
available with just a click of a button.

[daughter of Walley Leonard]
Solomon was a soldier in the Revolution from Sharon, and is said to have
fought at Bunker Hill (from "Isaac Esty And Some Of His Decendants" by
Gay Esty Bangs).
From the account of "The Esteys Of Old Stoughton" by Solomon Talbot, it is
written that Solomon's wife's name was Mary Leonard. Possibly her full name
was Mary Hannah Leonard (my thought, GWE). Talbot's account goes on...
"He was in the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17th 1775. At this time his wife
with the wivees of her neighbors who were in the army, hearing the heavy
cannonading and seeing the smoke of the burning Charlstown, gathered together
in the schoolhouse, and with fearful forboding spent the night watching and
praying for the dear ones away in battle... After the war he sold his
soldier's certificates to the State of Massachusetts for lands in Maine and
moved with his family to Farmington.
Douglas A Hall of Otisfield, ME, a descendant of Solomon, provided information
that Solomon and Hannah moved to Albion, ME. Solomon was a member of the
First Congregational Society in Winthrop.

From records provided to me by Ralph B. Esty of Marengo, Ohio, it states that
Jacob was adopted by a family in Hinsdale, NH but does not say what happened
to his parents or siblings. These records also state that the Estey Organ Co.
was started in 1866 by Jacob's son and son-in-law Lev Fuller. My records from
the diary of George Templeton Strong, entry of April 17th 1858, reads: On my
way up stopped at Estey's factory to hear a first class organ just completed
and destined for some Presbyterian conventicle at San Francisco... *

a footnote to this entry: Jacob Estey (1814-1890), after creating a
successful organ factory at Brattleboro, VT had placed a branch agency in New
